What is an open contract in the marine corps

I had dude in my MP school class that got the billet as open contract. I have no idea how that happened considering I had to wait a year to get a contract for the MOS. Anyway, he was a moron. After school and at his first duty station he managed to let two hookers lock him out of his own patrol car.

Best Answer: Infantry is the first MOS to get filled up..It is also the largest MOS which is why you have a greater chance of getting put into this MOS.. I went into the Marines as an open contract and I did NOT get 0300 MOS's..A lot of open contracts become cooks because this is a job no one wants.. Occasionally they may have minor bonuses for it, since they could use some people for hard to fill jobs. Open contract just means you agreed to join without being promised any specific job field, and they will decide where to put you as needed. Open Contract is not as bad a deal as most people make it out to be. Most people will tell you not to sign up Open because you will end up a Cook or in Infantry, which is completly false. Unless those are the only programs that you qualify for, you will be assigned to a more technical MOS. Open contract merely means that your MOS will be assigned according to the needs of the Corps. The needs of the Corps are definitely not the needs of any one particular Gunnery Sergeant and he will have no say in it. Headquarters Marine Corps has all the say and he will likely have no input in the matter whatsoever. Open contract is exactly what is says. You choose to sign a contract that says put me in any MOS you want. The same as signing a contract for a specific MOS. You then take the oath and enter the Delayed Entry Program. I think the recruiter is BSing you. Do not sign a contract or raise your hand and say the oath without getting the job you want.
